Teaching

A teaching apprenticeship

Work with us to train qualified teachers for your education setting through this new route. We'll develop an ongoing partnership with you to deliver a programme that combines school-based training and university-lead elements.

Our teaching expertise

60+ years of teacher training experience

We've been involved in teacher training since the 1950s. In that time, our Education Department has established their reputation for high-quality teaching and learning. We now have 100% graduate employment on our education courses (DLHE, 2017).

Partnerships with education settings

We work with over 500 schools, colleges and settings in most London boroughs, Hertfordshire, Essex, Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire. Many of these partnerships are connected to our Initial Teacher Training provision and others work with us in training teachers on the School Direct scheme.

Degree apprenticeship programmes in teaching

  • Learning through observation and reflection

We've established best practice for work-integrated learning in education through experience and innovation. Our trainee and their workplace mentor co-construct the curriculum with features including:

    • Apprentice trainees are observed during teaching by their mentor and other class teachers
    • Apprentices have opportunities to observe other teachers in their teaching too
    • Working with their mentor, trainees reflect on their professional practice in regular conversation
    • Mentors arrange additional chances for trainees to learn such as professional studies sessions, participation in meetings and teacher planning, preparation and marking time.

More about education and work-integrated learning

  • Our close partnership with you

We developed the curriculum for our Initial Teacher Training in partnership with schools and employers. When you work with us, you'll be part of an ongoing partnership to make our integration of learning, teaching and assessment possible.

We'll collaborate to make sure that school-based university-lead elements of the programme complement each other and we'll jointly assess trainees’ performance in the workplace. We encourage your school to be part of curriculum development days, mentoring conferences and our Partnership steering group.
