Overview

This one-day training aims to develop your health care professional knowledge and skills in delirium and sepsis recognition and management in older adults, with reference to NICE clinical guidelines.

It will be of interest to all healthcare professionals, including community-based practitioners, adult nurses, mental health professionals working in inpatient and community settings, and students on any health programmes.

Course content

Delirium鈥痠s a common and serious acute neuropsychiatric syndrome, affecting many older adults in both acute wards and in the community. Similarly, sepsis鈥痠s a potentially life-threatening condition caused by the body's response to an infection and poses a significant and increasing threat to鈥痮lder adults.

By the end of the session, you should be able to:

1. Explain the meaning of delirium, its prevalence and impact upon individuals
2. Demonstrate skills for the assessment and management of delirium
3. Demonstrate person centred approach that might be used to prevent and manage delirium episodes
4. Demonstrate effective communication skills when interacting and understanding the needs of people with delirium
5. Define sepsis and its relevance to practice
6. Recognise signs of potential sepsis in a deteriorating service user
7. Develop awareness of the ‘Sepsis Six’ care bundle and its significance

Learning and teaching

This module will be taught via synchronous online delivery using a web-based learning and teaching platforms (e.g. MS teams, Kaltura NewRow, Adobe Connect, Zoom).

The content on the day will be delivered via a mixture of PowerPoint presentation, small group exercise and discussions, group feedback and recap/quiz.
